How to Build Your Own Small Drum

Many people love to play the drums, and many have a fascination with them that goes beyond just playing them. If you have ever wanted to make your own small drum, then it is quite easy and inexpensive to do. There are several ways to make this instrument for yourself or even for a child to play on. There are also several types of containers that will be suitable for such a project. For instance, you can use a storage container of the correct shape, or even a cake pan to mimic the necessary sound chamber. You may also have some old empty tin containers lying around the house that can be repurposed and used.

The Materials

Besides the tin can or other suitable container to make the body of the drum you will also need to have a balloon, the size of which will be determined by the size of the container that you are using. In addition, you will require elastic bands or tape and various items of your choosing that can decorate the finished article. To make the project suitable for a young child, it is useful to have pieces of paper that they can color and stick on the sides and various ribbons or similar items they can play around with. You can come up with all kinds of ideas for your child to decorate the drum when you are finished.

Clean Them Off and Assemble the Parts

No matter what container you use, whether a tin can or cake pan, you need to be sure that it is completely clean and fully dry before you start assembly. If you use a tin can, you simply stretch the balloon over the open end of the can and use an elastic band or tape to firmly secure the rubber band in place.

For a larger container or cake pan, you should opt for a large punch balloon. Cut the top of the balloon off and if it has a large tip, then you need to tie it off first before using the balloon to make the drum. Following this, turn the balloon inside out and proceed to stretch it over the container. Next you need to ensure that the material is tightly attached and secured to the container which is best done using afore mentioned tape.

Now the fun part can begin, and you can decorate the drum to suit your personal tastes. Aside from gluing paper around the drum, you can also buy various types of fabric to use or if it is near Christmas time you can also glue a nice piece of tinsel around the middle to give a festive look.

Drum Sticks

To complete the kit, buy a pair of chopsticks or even some small wooden dowels to use as drum sticks. Making your own small drum is actually very easy and quite simple and it also makes a fun craft activity for a child.
